Walsh '20 Leads Girls' Cross Country Past Brooks

9/23/2019 3:36:00 PM

It was a great day to be a Zebra as the Middlesex Girls' Cross Country team, minds full from a thought-provoking All School Read discussion, took to our home course to face visiting Brooks.  The Middlesex team ran with patience and composure, displaying both toughness and teamwork in warm conditions.  Senior captain Gabby Walsh led all competitors for the second time in as many weeks.  She was followed by an impressive pack of Middlesex runners (senior Alene Fernandes in 2nd, junior Grace Hu in 3rd, sophomore Annabelle Rogers in 4th, junior Meena Menon in 5th, and junior Jillian Robertson in 6th, sophomore Mariam Craig in 8th, senior captain Nina Douge in 9th, and sophomore Josie Silk in 10th) who combined to secure 9 of the top 10 individual places.  For Mariam, the result represented her first varsity finish and a PR, and for Nina, it represented a win in the JV race within a race.

Although Brooks did not have a complete JV team, the Middlesex second seven, led by Nina and Josie, performed very well, with junior Amelia Stevens (14th), senior Maya Sidhu (15th), junior Megan Ding (16th), and senior Phoebe Lu (17th) all finishing ahead of the 5th runner from visiting Brooks.  Senior Maanasi Chintamani, running a home course PR, ran well for 19th place and 7th in our second seven.  Annabelle, Mariam, Elizabeth Gatto, Rosie Qin, and Mia Peng all ran our home course in their fastest ever times, and Charlotte Wolford competed in her first 5K for Middlesex.  Those team members who were not able to run found a way to be of service to the race effort, and the coaches were again impressed with the team's focus and positivity.

The team looks forward to returning to training before facing our first away race and our first quad meet next Saturday on the storied St. Mark's course.
