The Girls' Soccer team traveled down to Pomfret to open up the 2019 campaign on a cool, damp September afternoon. The girls have worked hard during our preseason and tryout sessions, and they were eager to get the season underway.
The first half started well, as Middlesex established a strong possession game, and moved the ball unselfishly around the pitch. Although the Zebras held the territorial advantage, they were not able to find the back of the net. The play leveled out in the middle of the first half, and Pomfret took advantage of a misplay in the backfield to take a 1-0 lead. Middlesex stayed composed and continued to pressure Pomfret's defense. In the 35th minute, Carly Tilson '20 found an opening along the left end line and threaded a great pass to Taryn Gillis '22, who was surgical in the finish to tie it. Not to be outdone, Pomfret quickly earned a corner kick towards the end of the half and hit a great shot to take the lead going into halftime.
Halftime adjustments were discussed, and the girls came out with great urgency. They continued to maintain long stretches of possession, but the Pomfret goalkeeper was equal to every question asked of her. The Zebras remained unflappable and kept up a persistent attack. They were rewarded late in the game when Hannah Barron '22 hit a great one-time volley off an Abby Murphy '23 corner to knot the game at 2. With 2:56 left on the clock, the girls went all in on the attack, winning loose balls, and with under a minute remaining, Tilson hammered home the game-winner just inside the box. What a fantastic start to the season!
Thank you to all the parents who came and supported us. We enjoyed the snacks and drinks on the joyous bus ride home! Middlesex continues our non-ISL schedule when we host Andover on Wednesday at Chapel Field.
