Middlesex had a dominant performance in their first race of the 2019 season, racing well on their home course despite the somewhat soggy and humid conditions. The team effort was led by senior captain Gabby Walsh, who won the 7th regular season race of her career and looked strong despite running alone for most of the 3.1 miles. Behind her, a pack of runners led by junior Grace Hu in 2nd, sophomore Annabelle Rogers in 3rd, senior Alene Fernandes in 4th, junior Jillian Robertson in 5th, junior Meena Menon in 6th, and senior captain Nina Douge in 7th, worked well together throughout the course to secure the perfect varsity score.
Although Lawrence did not have a complete JV team, sophomore Mariam Craig, running her first cross country race ever, won the JV race-within-a-race to finish 9th. Sophomore Josie Silk (10th), junior Amelia Stevens (11th), and senior Maya Sidhu (12th) all finished within 30 seconds of each other not far behind Mariam, and junior Grace Luettgen (15th), junior Megan Ding (16th), and senior Phoebe Lu (17th) rounded out the Middlesex second seven.
Special congratulations are owed to Mariam, senior Elizabeth Gatto, freshmen Rosie Qin, Mia Peng, Justine Lam, Ellie Ragosa, Lily Weinstein, and sophomore Amy Li for completing their first races with the team. In total, an impressive 27 runners finished the race for Middlesex, more than any race in the 2018 season. The coaches were impressed with the composure and positivity of the whole squad, from managers to runners, and we look forward to another week of training before facing Brooks at home next weekend.
