Middlesex grabbed an early lead and withstood a late rally to beat St. George's 5-3 in their ISL baseball finale on Saturday. With the win, the Zebras finished with a record of 6-9 in league play.
Cole Cleary '20 led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a bunt hit by Kyle Heath '21. After Heath stole second, both runners were driven in by a double off the bat of Kyle Wolff '22.
Middlesex added to their lead in the second. Marc Portlock '20 led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a single by Eoin Morrissey '22. A Cleary sacrifice fly scored Portlock for a 3-0 advantage.
The Zebras added another run in the top of the fifth when Wolff and Kevin Campbell led off the inning with consecutive doubles. St. George's rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, however, and the score stood at 4-3 after five innings.
Middlesex responded with an important insurance run in the top of the sixth. Morrissey led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Another beautiful bunt hit from Heath and walks to Campbell and Joey Belsanti '21 plated the fifth run and provided the final margin of victory.
Cleary got the win on the mound, his third of the season. Danny Collins '22 recorded five huge outs to snuff out the St. George's rally and Wolff pitched the seventh while striking out three to record his third save.
The game marked the final appearance for two four year seniors, Jared Arnold '19 and Jason Saharia '19, both of whom provided tremendous leadership to a young team this season.
