The Middlesex School Girls' Varsity Tennis team won its match 11 - 4 against St. George's Saturday afternoon and finished its season on a 5-match win streak in the regular season.
Neha Kommineni '22 once again led the Zebras singles lineup both in position and composure on the court - her teammates and fans could not be prouder of the way she comports herself and plays in matches. She outpaced her opponent to sweep sets. Marissa Fadely '22 also played a determined match against a powerful baseliner; off to a strong start, she struggled to hold her lead in the second set and spit sets with her opponent. Senior captain Maud McCole played a confident, consistent match at #3 and took both sets handily. Averill Emery '20 battled it out in the first set to edge her opponent 7-5. Her opponent came back out with renewed firepower, and Emery ultimately split sets. Jessie Andrews '21 showed off her improved game and confidence on the court to win both her sets decisively. After struggling to find the mind-body balance in her tennis game, Margaret Rand '19 came out for this match feeling back in the groove. She played a skilled game and captured both points for her team.
The overall match was secured 10 - 2 heading into doubles. All girls on the Zebras' eligible roster had a chance to play. Competitive matches were played by McCole/Emery at #1 and Rand/Sophia Schubnel at #2. Katy Qin '21 and Julia Li '21 were ahead 6-0 at one point, when their opponents made a 7 game comeback. With an important shift in their mental game, they won the next two games to secure the final point.
With an overall record of 13 - 4, this victory represents a strong finish to the most successful spring the team has had in recent years. Our team is sad to say goodbye to seniors Maud McCole (c) and Margaret Rand. The team's success is due in no small part to their contributions on and off the court, and we wish them the best of luck in college this fall.
