The Middlesex Girls' Varsity Tennis team won its match 8 - 7 against Brooks Wednesday afternoon in a nailbiter that went down to a tiebreaker in the final doubles match to be determined. The match was played outdoors with cool temperatures and cloudy skies.
Off to a bit of a slow start, Middlesex captured only two of the first six sets. Making a comeback in the second sets, the Zebras won five out of six, keeping them in the running. Neha Kommineni '22 led the our singles lineup at #1. Coming back from injury, senior captain Maud McCole split sets with her opponent at #2. Marissa Fadely played a confident match and won both her sets at #3, Averill Emery '20 struggled to find her groove initially and dropped the first set 2 - 6. She went out in the second set determined to pull through and outlasted her opponent to take the competitive set 7 - 5. Jessie Andrews '21 played a commendable match at #5 clinching both sets for the team score. And Margaret Rand '19 at #6 played a competitive first set that went into a tiebreaker, which she lost. However, she was able to turn her momentum around in the second to win the point decidedly 6 - 1.
The Zebras set out for doubles knowing the overall match was on the line and in order to win, they needed to win just one of the doubles points. After losing both #3 and #2 doubles and down on court #1, our prospects did not look good. Demonstrating tremendous determination and grit, Kommineni and Fadely played some of the best and most exciting tennis we have seen from them this season and managed to break their opponents and gain a lead. The Brooks girls would not give up easily and pushed the match into a tiebreaker. Our girls were up for the challenge and won the TB decisively 7 - 0 to win the overall match for the Zebras.Â
With a current record of 10 - 3, our squad will take this good momentum with them into the Class B NEPSAC tournament as the #3 seed this weekend.Â
