Girls Varsity Tennis Defeats Lawrence, 15-0

4/25/2019 10:23:00 AM

The Middlesex Girls' Varsity Tennis team swept Lawrence Academy 15 - 0 Wednesday afternoon in a commendable team win in which every player on our eligible roster scored toward the overall victory.

From top to bottom, our players worked hard to maintain their mental focus, to reduce their own unforced errors, and take some risks. Senior captain Maud McCole led the singles lineup for the Zebras, winning both her sets at #1. Other singles sweeps were had by Neha Kommineni '22 at #2, Marissa Fadely '22 at #3, Averill Emery '20 at #4, Jessie Andrews '21 at #5, and Margaret Rand '19 at #6. Half of the points were scored with bagel sets, and both Emery and Rand boasted a double bagel, not dropping even one game.

With the overall match secured heading into doubles, our pairs head out determined to implement good strategy and aggressive tactics. At #1, Kommineni and Fadely clinched their third point each towards the overall score. Emery and Katy Qin '21 made a good team pairing powerful groundstrokes and aggressive net play to win the #2 doubles point. Despite being down at one point early on, Sophia Schubnel '22 and Julia Li '21 came back and won the next several games to clinch the set for the final point for the team at #3.

Due to the heavy rain forecasted for Friday, the squad's next match will be tomorrow at The Rivers School, where they will hope to keep their good momentum and their streak going.
