Boys' Varsity Hockey Falls to Rivers 2-1 in a Tough Home Battle

2/19/2019 11:12:00 AM

On Saturday February 16, the Boys' Varsity Hockey team took on the Rivers School for the second time this year at a game played at Middlesex School. Senior goalie Joe Stanizzi, who leads all goalies in prep school hockey in save percentage, was challenged often and early in the first period. At 4:51 of the first period the puck took a weird bounce off the back boards and one of the Rivers forwards took a quick shot just squeezing on the short side to take a 1-0 lead. In the first shift of the second period a shot from the point was tipped by two different Rivers players and the puck eluded Stanizzi at the 0:25 second mark of the period. Although Rivers continued to carry the play, Middlesex started to get more chances and some hard work in front of the Rivers net paid off in a goal. Freshman Joe Freeman launched a shot from the blue line that resulted in a battle in front. That battle was won by senior forward Alex Rivet and the scoring gap was cut to one. The teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the game and for the second time this season, Middlesex fell to Rivers by identical 2-1 scores. The boys' head into the final week of regular season play with an away game on Wednesday (February 20) and a home game against St. George's on Saturday February 23 at 3:30PM.
