Girls’ Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Exeter, 2-1

10/31/2019 10:00:00 AM

Middlesex Girls' Soccer hosted Phillips Exeter at Chapel Field for an out of league tilt at the close of October under overcast skies.

Exeter got off to a great start as they converted a scoring situation into a goal in just the 4th minute of play, as Middlesex could not clear their penalty area. Middlesex was forced to chase yet another game, but the girls were up for the challenge, as they pressed hard against Exeter's defense. Their effort was rewarded at the stroke of halftime, as a dangerous corner kick served by Ella Matteucci '22 was struck by Lola Davis '20, who hit the post, but Taryn Gillis '22 slammed home the rebound to knot the game at 1.

The second half saw both teams play solidly, each creating good scoring opportunities, and playing solid, physical soccer. Middlesex gave up a corner with just three minutes to play, and Exeter converted as their header hit the bar and ricocheted in for the game-winner. Middlesex pressed hard for the equalizer but ran out of time.

Middlesex gets back at it on Friday as they again play host to perennial Class B powerhouse Pingree.
