Girls' squash traveled to Groton on Wednesday and played one of their best matches of the season, as they prepare for the High School National Championships this weekend. At #2, senior Syona Shah used good length and width and excellent court coverage to move ahead in both of the first two games, but she could not find quite the right combination of shots to close the deal, and her opponent ended up using low hard shots to the back to prevail. At #3 junior Averill Emery started well, but could not quite cover her opponent's crosses and fell behind 2 -0 in games and 8-3 in the third game. However, Averill found her range, using deep drives and crosses to gain the T and dropping with authority once she'd done so. Averill thus won games 3 and 4, and it came down to a tight fifth game. Averill fought her way back from 8-10, to hold a game point at 13-12, and finally converted the win with a backhand halfvolley drop, 17-15 in the fifth. At #4 senior Margaret Rand won the opening game with clever drops and crosses, but her opponent began to cross in return. Margaret continued to fight valiantly, but in the end could not answer her opponent's crosses. At #5 sophomore Natalie McCall fell behind 2-0 in games, but she began to use depth and hard low shots to work her way back into the match, winning the third game and gaining a solid lead in the fourth; however, her opponent began to use the whole court with her shot placements, and Natalie fell just short in the fourth game. All in all, the Zebras have not moved this well or hit with as much accuracy and strategy all season; they seem poised to put in a solid performance at Nationals at Loomis this weekend.Â
