In an afternoon of thrilling action and nail-biting results on the home mat, the Middlesex Zebras took down BB&N 57-21 to avenge a dual meet loss a year ago and roared back from a 0-30 deficit against Governor's Academy to a 42-42 tie, taking the loss in the end on tie-breaker criteria.
Senior Turner Bredrup set Middlesex on the right path against the Knights by picking up a tough 10-3 decision at 126, and senior co-captain Peter Daichman looked dominant in securing a tech fall pin at 132. Falls by senior Diego Flores, senior co-captain Dante Gutbrod, and sophomore Axel Romell ensured the team victory for the Zebras.
Govs' tough lineup of talented light and middleweights saw Middlesex drop five straight matches to start the dual. Junior Jose Garza nonetheless came out aggressive and physical at 152 and inspired his teammates with a fall four seconds into the second period. Diego Flores, junior Alek Kebabjian, junior Michael Conde and sophomore Axel Romell all recorded falls, and Dante Gutbrod picked up a forfeit as the the Zebras took a 36-30 lead. After matches at 285 and 106 went to Govs, freshman Daniel Okyere tied the score at 42 with a rare, come-from-behind defensive pin at 113.
All and all, it was great day in the Room as the young Zebras competed hard and continued their winning ways into the heart of the dual meet season.
