Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Tops St. Mark's, 9-7

The Zebras traveled to Southborough to take on ISL rival St. Mark's Wednesday afternoon.  Middlesex set the tone from the beginning, scoring a quick goal in the first 30 seconds and then maintaining control for much of the first 15 minutes of the game, thanks to strong draw controls and poised attack.  St. Mark's first possession was stymied when goalie Caroline Fischer rallied the defense by making a huge save on a point blank shot off a fast break.  St. Mark's notched their first goal at the 15 minute mark, but a determined Zebras squad answered with two strong drives set up off of smart and quick ball movement.  St. Mark's notched a final goal in the half, but Marina Bevacqua and Alex Fehnel combined for a beautiful goal to end the half.  In the second half, Fehnel struck again off a feed by Sophie MacKeigan to again set the tone.  Over the next sixteen minutes, play went back and forth, but St. Mark's climbed back into the game, notching two goals to close the gap to 7-5 in Middlesex's favor.  Maddie MacMaster and Lucie Gildehaus combined for a terrific goal at the 7 minute mark, but St. Mark's continued to fight, bringing it to 8-6 at the 6 minute mark off a fast break transition. The teams traded goals in the remaining 5 minutes and the Middlesex team rallied around the athletic, tireless, and poised play of Bevacqua, who notched a key goal and, despite athletic and high defensive pressure, heroically held the ball for the win.  MacKeigan, Hughes, Gildehaus, and MacMaster were ruthless on the draw and Fisher notched 11 saves and 3 ground balls.
