Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Defeats Brooks, 14-12

5/17/2018 3:23:00 PM

The Zebras traveled to Brooks in what can only be described as an epic battle, fought well by both teams.  Middlesex came out strong, taking a lead in the first 20 minutes of the half; however, the Brooks team came roaring back in the final minute of play to bring the score to 8-7 at halftime in Middlesex's favor.  In the second half, the teams traded goals in the first five minutes, but then Brooks took their first lead of the game (10-9) with 17:20 remaining in the half.  Sophie MacKegian answered three minutes later, evening the score, with a fast break created by Lucie Gildehaus, and the back-and-forth battle began.  After 4 minutes of solid defense at both ends, Brooks notched a goal at 13:24 and then Middlesex answered 15 seconds later to keep the score at 11-11.  Brooks again took the lead off a fast break with 12:52 remaining, but that would be their last of the day.  Digging deep and playing with poise, athleticism, and teamwork, the Zebras notched three goals in the remaining 10 minutes, and played tremendous defense thanks to the rock solid play of Silk, Roark, Tilson, Hughes, MacKeigan, MacMaster, Gildehaus, and Boynton.  While the play continued back and forth until the final whistle, the Zebras walked away with a well-fought team win.  Highlights included the defensive effort, excellent goal-scoring, ball movement, and  assists by Fehnel, MacMaster, Bevacqua, MacKeigan, Hurley, and Gildehaus, game-changing draw controls and ground balls by Hughes, Sydney MacKeigan, literally giving the shirt off her back for her teammate, and the entire team supporting and helping the starting unit with communication and much-needed energy and care.  It was an excellent display of teamwork today from every Zebra player.
