The Girls' Varsity Tennis team won its match against Rivers 12 - 3 in another great team victory with everyone on the roster scoring a point toward the overall match. It was a beautiful day to play tennis and the warmest conditions so far this spring with temperatures in the low 70s and sunny skies.Â
Under the strong leadership of captain Helen Lasry at #1, our singles lineup set out ready to play and secured an early lead in first set scores. Maud McCole '19 at #2 found she could rely on her opponent to commit the errors in the first set, winning 6-1. In the second set, her opponent's consistency kicked in, and Maud had to adjust her game after falling behind initially. She trusted her instincts and made the right changes to capture the competitive second set 7-5. At #3, Miranda Fiore '19 hustled to get after every ball and patiently played out each point, handily sweeping her sets. Madeline Graham '18 at #4 proved to bring the stronger mental game to the match, outlasting her opponent in rallies and clinching the critical pressure points to win both her sets. Despite being off to a bit of a nervy start, Averill Emery '20 dialed in and focused her shots to take both points for her team in the #5 position. And at #6, Parker Firestone '21 showed off the progress she's made in developing her game this season, splitting sets with her opponent.Â
The Zebras went into doubles having secured the overall match with good momentum and positive energy. At #3, Jessica Andrews '21 and Margaret Rand '19 played a confident set with good decisions and solid teamwork to construct points; they won their set 8-4. Graham and Emery took their set 8-3, playing one of the most consistent matches this season with smart volleys at net and reliable groundstrokes to target their opponents' weak points. Lasry and McCole were off to a slow start in their doubles match, and at one point were down 0-5. Inspiring their coach, teammates, and spectators, they approached one point at a time to crawl their way back up and to win the tiebreaker 7-4!Â
After celebrating a satisfying win this weekend, the group will put in three practices before facing Groton Thursday. Â
