St. Mark's scored with two out in the last of the 7th to walk off with a 2-1 win over Middlesex in the ISL opener for both teams on Monday. The game featured outstanding pitching performances by Middlesex's Mike Doherty and St. Mark's C.J. McKennitt. Hits were hard to come by, as the two teams combined for just 6 on the day.
Middlesex opened the game with a double by co-captain Cormac Duhamel. A sacrifice bunt put Duhamel at third with one out but McKennitt struck out the next two batters to end the threat. St. Mark's struck first in the bottom of the third with a two out single to go on top 1-0. Middlesex answered in the top of the 5th as a walk, a hit batsmen, and three wild pitches plated Kevin Campbell with the Zebra's first run. With the go ahead run on third and only one out, a liner to third turned into a double play to end the inning.
St. Mark's threatened to take the lead with a leadoff double in the bottom of the 6th. A wild pitch put the go ahead run at third with none out but Doherty escaped the jam with a pop out, strike out and fly out to strand the runner. Doherty went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 9 as he was tagged with the tough luck loss.
Middlesex looks to bounce back on Wednesday when they host Tabor at 3:30 pm.
