MX Wrestling Crowned Champions at Northern New England Tournament

2/4/2018 10:12:00 AM

Middlesex Wrestling won the Northern New England Tournament Saturday afternoon in spectacular fashion, edging runner-up BB&N by just 1.5 points to earn the championship crown. Peter Daichman won the 126lb weight class, Dante Gutbrod took first at 152lbs and Ted Pyne finished second at 160lbs. Alene Fernendes, Michael Acevedo, and Diego Flores each finished in fourth place and Alek Kebabjian and Sam Ferrone solidified fifth place finishes for the victory.

The all-day event was full of excitement, especially toward the end of the tournament. Middlesex was trailing by six points, but a pin by Dante Gutbrod in the finals and Alek Kebabjian earning a fifth place victory put the MX Wrestlers up three points with only a small hope of holding on to the victory with no more competitors left to score. Five teams were within striking distance: Phillips Exeter, Phillips Andover, Portsmouth Abbey, host-team Hyde, Maine, and BB&N. The team went on rooting for the fellow ISL team BB&N in the final three weight classes.  One after another, the results ended in Middlesex's favor, with the final match of note the 3rd and 4th battle at heavyweight, which could have given the host team Hyde, Maine the lead by a single point but ended with Middlesex just edging the field by 1.5 points. The excitement was palpable as the team let out a loud yell of victory and the celebration began.

Each wrestler realized his or her contribution made a difference Saturday, from wrestling through adversity to make it to the medal round, to freshman working as back up wrestlers at weights, to winning by pin late in matches and come from behind victories, the Zebras brought the fortitude and determination throughout the day to lead the team to victory.  There were so many amazing performances, all of which created one very special day for the Middlesex Wrestling Team.
