Middlesex traveled to St. Sebastian's School in Needham to face off against an energized Arrows squad who fielded nearly a full lineup. An enthusiastic crowd in St. Sebastian's beautiful new wrestling arena fueled the Zebras to 57-19 win and 2-0 start to the ISL season.
Senior co-captain Dante Gutbrod opened the meet by taking a forfeit at 170, and junior Alek Kebabjian set the tone early at 182, earning a fall in under a minute with his explosive style and overwhelming pace. Junior Mike Conde controlled the tempo for much of his match at 195, but got caught by his opponent in the final session and lost by fall. Sophomore Axel Romell and freshman Nick DeBruin picked up quick first-period pins to stake a 24-6 lead for Middlesex as the meet turned around to the lighter weights.
Freshman Daniel Okyere dropped his match at 106, but freshman Julian Dai and junior Alene Fernandes picked up forfeits at 113 and 120, and senior co-captain Peter Daichman secured the victory for the Zebras with a second-period pin. After senior Sam Ferrone fell by major decision at 132, Middlesex reeled off three straight victories to close out the meet, with sophomore Connor Cross and junior Jose Garza winning by fall, and senior Diego Flores earning a stunning last-minute decision in the marquee match of the night.
Freshman Love Daley and junior Chris Elson each earned crowd-pleasing victories by fall in exhibition matches, and junior Mike Conde also picked up a win. The Zebras return to dual meet action after the holiday break at home against Roxbury Latin and Landmark School.
