Zebras Earn Hard Fought Draw Against Lawrence, Tie 1-1

10/5/2018 2:14:00 PM

The Middlesex girls' soccer team took to a damp Chapel Field Wednesday afternoon to face Lawrence Academy. The Zebras had yet to notch a victory on the season, so the girls were motivated to put forward their best foot against a Lawrence team who had rattled off 4 straight wins to start their season.

From the get go, Middlesex played with passion and great camaraderie, possessing the ball for stretches at a time, and applying good pressure on the Lawrence defense. Midway through the first half, Lawrence counter-attacked against the run of play, and a shot from outside the penalty box hit the crossbar and was ruled over the line for a goal. Although the Zebras continued to press, they were unable to find the back of the Lawrence net, and halftime arrived with Lawrence holding a 1-0 lead.

However, the girls felt good about their play in the first half, and they continued to play at a high tempo, partnered with some strong physical defense when they lost possession. The clocked continued to click down, and it seemed that Middlesex would run out of time to score an equalizer. But the girls remained hopeful, played hard, and their belief was rewarded as their persistent pressure resulted in a turnover deep in the Lawrence end, and a quick strike by Ellery Winkler '19 blasted through to the net with just three minutes remaining. The girls surged ahead to try and find the game winner, but alas the final whistle blew before it could come to fruition. Middlesex settled for a hard fought draw against the Spartans, in what was surely their best effort of this young season.

The Zebras hope to continue this positive momentum as they travel up to Brooks on Saturday.

Thank you to all the family and fans for their positive support, and for the snacks and drinks after the game!
