Middlesex hosted the tenacious Governor's on Wednesday for another tough I.S.L battle. The game started with both teams fighting for possession and momentum. Carly Tilson '20 made some strong runs on the outside to create a couple early offensive chances. Eventually, Carly was taken down inside the '18 by a tough Gov's defender and Middlesex was awarded a penalty kick, which Ellery Winkler '19 netted to put the Zebras up by one. Both teams continued to battle with Governor's initiating some quick counter-attacks with their speed up top and Middlesex fought to play some key balls through the Governor's back line to create more opportunity. Ellery Winkler '19 finally broke through to capitalize on a rebound inside the box to slip the ball beyond the Gov's keeper to put the Zebras up by two going into halftime. Middlesex regrouped at halftime, and was determined to increase the intensity of our play right from the start of the second half. As a result, Middlesex carried most of the play for the first part of the half, but Gov's secured the first of their two goals on a quick counter-attack to close the gap 2-1. Middlesex battled back and freshman Taryn Gillis '22 buried a shot with an assist from Ellery Winkler to go up 3-1. Gov's proved relentless and continued to press to create offensive opportunities and eventually got their second one with only a few minutes left in the game to make the score 3-2. Middlesex had several late in the half chances with excellent play by Lola Davis '20, Ella Matteucci '22 and Hannah Barron '22 up top, but the clock wound down and the Zebras ended up on top 3-2. Middlesex will gear up for another big rivalry against Groton on Friday.
