Despite missing two of their usual top five, the Middlesex varsity boys' cross country team picked up three more wins amid mild weather and autumnal scenery at Brooks School to extend their stay atop the ISL table into the season's fifth week. The Zebras defeated the hosts by a 15-50 margin, earning victories over Governor's Academy (15-48) and St. Sebastian's (17-46) on the same verdant and hilly course.
Junior co-captain Justin O'Toole and sophomore Caleb Gartner once again led the way, coming to the line in tandem in 17:50. They were followed closely by freshman Cooper Austen, with sophomore Andrew Harris and junior Jack Starobin rounding out a top five that conceded only one place to an opposing runner on the day. Sophomore David Latham and junior Logan Tonra earning displacement points for the team in their varsity debuts.
The junior varsity picked up two wins to run their season record to an impressive 7-2. Sophomore Connor Cross won the JV contest handily in 19:12, and he was followed directly by five Middlesex runners — Cannon Caspar, Sam Ferrone, Zan Danoff, Gavin Cassidy and John Fashek — as the Zebras swept the top six places of the race within a race. Sophomore Peter Gilbert claimed the seventh spot to cement a 15-50 victory over Brooks and a 15-49 victory Governor's.
Next up for Middlesex is a trip to Groton School, where the Zebras of Concord will put their undefeated record on the line against their northern brethren.
