Boys' Varsity Hockey Edged by Rivers; Stanizzi '19 Records 43 Saves

1/29/2018 9:55:00 AM

Despite an amazing performance that personified teamwork, the Zebras fell to the Red Wings of Rivers Saturday by a 2-0 margin.  Rivers came to Concord yesterday as the 2nd ranked team in all of Prep hockey, wielding a 17-1-2 record.  Despite that, however, the Zebras were not intimidated.  Employing a strong defensive strategy from the outset to neutralize their powerful offense, MX grew more confident with each shift.  It was not until midway through the second period that Rivers would strike for the game's first goal.  The score would remain that way until the games final minutes.  Led by the leadership of senior captains Harrison Clark and Dylan Fields, Middlesex tried furiously to even up the score, throwing everything at the net.  It was to no avail unfortunately, as Rivers tallied on the power-play with 5:30 remaining, making the score 2-0.  It should be noted that the defensive core, led by senior Zach McCrystal, and sophomore Anthony Mandravellos, played outstanding, as did junior goalie, Joe Stanizzi, who stopped 43 of 45 shots. The loss drops the Zebras to 5-7-1 on the season. MX will look to get back on track at home on Wednesday against arch rival St. George's.
