Girls' Varsity Soccer loses a close one at St. Mark's, 3-2

9/24/2017 2:23:00 PM

The Middlesex Girls' Soccer team traveled to Southborough Saturday to take on the St. Mark's Lions on hot and humid afternoon. The game started ominously, as St. Mark's were quick off the mark and scored a pair of quick goals to take a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes. The lady Zebras slowly found the footing, but St. Mark's threatened again as they were awarded a penalty kick midway through the half. The shot rang off the left post, and the moment was not lost on us, as the momentum started to turn in our favor. With ten minutes left in the half, Basha Waxman '21 scored her first career goal by lofting a shot over the goalie right along the end line. Continuing to press, Middlesex found themselves on the counter-attack in extra time of the half when Ellery Winkler '19 fed a beautiful through ball to Lucie Gildehaus '18, who finished it at the stroke of halftime.

Unfortunately, the opening minutes of the second half found the girls again on their heels, and St. Mark's pounced, scoring the eventual game winner just three minutes into the half. The game see-sawed back and forth for the middle part of the half, but Middlesex upped their intensity and pressed forward for an equalizer in the final 20 minutes. The girls kept the ball in the St. Mark's half and created numerous scoring opportunities in the final few minutes, but none could find the back of the net. We were so proud of the effort and desire to play to the final whistle under adverse conditions.

We would also like to thank our parents and friends who supported the girls during our game, and for the delicious snacks and beverages afterwards!

The Zebras return home to play Tabor Academy on Wednesday.
