Middlesex Boys' Varsity Soccer Match Report, 9/16/2017
Final Score: Middlesex 2 @ Pomfret School 0

Middlesex traveled to Pomfret, CT to face a stern early season test and came away with a 2-0 victory to increase their record to 2-0-0.  Under hot September conditions on a relatively narrow field, Middlesex stayed compact defensively and limited the scoring chances for the home team.  After an increasingly dangerous period of midfield play for Middlesex, the scoring was opened in the 21st minute when junior Josh Quirk pulled the strings to assist on a well struck finish to the back post from outside of the box by sophomore Ollie Cheever.  The best chance of the game for Pomfret came in the first half when a stray clearance into the middle from the Middlesex defense was struck with a dipping volley that hit the crossbar and ricocheted out of harm's way.  With the score at 1-0 at the half, the Zebras upped their defensive intensity after a flat period towards the end of the first half and took control of the match.  The lead increased to 2-0 when junior Jacob Charles buried a one-touch finish off of a great service from Haydn Herrema.  Quirk, Herrema, and senior captain Jack Lousararian combined to be the keys to victory for Middlesex by controlling the midfield.  The 2-0 score line was the first clean sheet for freshman keeper Alfonso De Vito, and the back four deserve a great deal of credit for limiting the chances over the course of 90 minutes.  Middlesex travels to St. Mark's next on Saturday, 9/23, to open the ISL season with some strong momentum gained through two challenging road victories against quality Class B opponents.
