Girls' Tennis Finishes Season on Six-Game Win Streak

5/30/2017 2:04:00 PM

Middlesex Girls' Varsity Tennis finished its season strong against traditional ISL rival St. George's 11 - 4 Saturday afternoon. The match was the Zebras' 6th consecutive win to end their season with an overall record of 9 - 7. Temperatures were cool, and the sun was trying to peak its head out as the singles matches began.

Helen Lasry '18 led the singles ladder at #1 to capture 10 out of 12 possible points and determine the overall match win for the Zebras. In her first set, Lasry started off in a hole 2 - 5 but dug deep and fought herself out to take her opponent into a tiebreaker. The players battled out each point back and forth until Lasry finally prevailed 10 - 8 to take the point for her team. Her opponent struggled to recover from the mental grind of the first set, and Lasry won the second set 6 - 0. Captain Caroline Reynolds '17 started off her match with a competitive mindset; this served her well in her match, sweeping sets at #2 singles. Maud McCole '19 stepped up to play a close contest at #3 singles; she started off strong, taking the first set 6 - 4. In the second set, her rival seemed to find her groove and took the point 4 - 6.

It was fun to watch Miranda Fiore '19 put into play the progress she has made as a singles player this season at #4 singles. Continuing to employ her counterpuncher tactics, Miranda has added some power and aggressive placement to her arsenal that makes her tough to beat. She swept her sets at #4. Laura Kaye '17 had another good match at #5 singles, taking both of her sets by keeping her opponent on the move and beating her with consistency and craftiness. Averill Emery '20 was asked to play up two positions due to sickness on the team. Her teammates were proud of the way she played. While she struggled a bit to get into the rhythm of singles in her first set 2 - 6, she returned in the second determined to capture the point. Emery took her opponent into a tiebreaker, where she eventually wore her down 7 - 3.

The girls carried their positive energy into doubles. At #1 Lasry and Reynolds played a powerful and aggressive set to win 8 - 3. The sets played at #2 and #3 were competitive, but ultimately the Dragons prevailed.

It was the last career match of our seniors: Caroline Reynolds, Laura Kaye, and Sophia Corning. We wish them all the best and hope they come back to visit!
