Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Edges Governor's 9-8 in ISL Battle

5/25/2017 10:09:00 PM

The Zebras traveled to Byfield to take on ISL rival Governor's Academy.  As predicted the game, with much at stake, was back and forth and tight until the final seconds of play.  Both teams played relentlessly for 60 minutes, fighting for every draw control and ground ball and playing with poise and discipline at both ends of the field.  Govs took the lead, but MacKeigan put the Zebras on the board with 15:14 remaining on a free position shot.  Middlesex came back out of a 3-1 deficit to tie it at 3 with goals from Lucie Gildehaus and Alex Fehnel.  The game went back and forth for the remainder of the half and Govs claimed a 6-5 lead at halftime.  In the second half, Fehnel took less than a minute to tie the game at 6, but the Govs came roaring back and took an 8-6 lead.  Maddie MacMaster set up Lucie Gildehaus twice in just over a minute to even the score at 8 with 15:53 remaining in the game.  Maddie added the game winner a minute and a half later (14:12) and the Zebras pressed on, winning a key draw and making big stops in the defensive end. Having possession for much of the remaining minutes, the Zebras played a poised and patient attack system.  The Govs made some key turnovers, leading to game-tying opportunities, but the defensive unit and goalie Caroline Fischer came up big to deny the equalizer.  The Zebras held possession at the 6 minute mark, but Govs was able to nab the turnover with 1:30 remaining on the clock.  However, the defensive unit again came up big and Katharine French brought the ball up the sidelines and swung it back to Caroline Silk and Caroline Hughes for the transfer.  As the clock dwindled, the Zebras maintained possession and notched a huge 9-8 win.  Shannon Wing was relentless in the defensive unit, shutting down Govs' top attackers in the second half.
