Girls' Varsity Tennis Edges Pomfret

5/13/2017 11:25:00 AM

The Girls' Varsity Tennis team stepped out of the ISL to play Pomfret Wednesday and won the overall match 4 - 3. Our team traveled to CT and competed in cool temperatures with sunny skies overhead.
Senior Sophia Corning led the singles ladder by example as well as position, taking control of each point and putting the Zebras on the board with her win. Junior Helen Lasry was off to a strong start in her match at #2 singles; unfortunately, her opponent was injured mid-match and forfeited as a result. While disappointed not to finish her contest, she channeled her competitive energy into cheering on her teammates.
Captain Caroline Reynolds '17 and Maud McCole '19 tried to adjust their play style to break their opponents' strategy but ultimately lost the nailbiter set 6 - 8.  Dynamic duo Madeline Graham '18 and Laura Kaye '17 started out aggressively and maintained their lead throughout the match to take the point for Middlesex.
The overall match score was tied up and hinging on the third doubles team Averill Emery '20 and Margaret Rand '19. Our girls leaned into the pressure and played with grit, striking a fine balance between aggressiveness and consistency to clinch their set along with the winning final point.
Since we were playing a format different from our usual lineup, in which our players could not repeat singles and doubles, we needed 10 girls and had only 9 on our roster.  Special thanks to junior Sophie Stewart for stepping up from JV to fill in the 10th spot, so that we did not have to forfeit the set!
Our girls will celebrate the win tonight and put in two focused practices before heading to Cambridge to challenge BB&N Saturday.
