The Girls' Varsity Tennis team traveled to Weston Saturday to battle Rivers in the most humid conditions either team had played this season. The Zebras fell 5 - 10 in a close match that went down to doubles to be decided.
Even though they did not manage to take any sets, senior Sophia Corning and junior Helen Lasry had lots of good points and represented their team well at #1 an #2 singles, respectively. Captain Caroline Reynolds was off to a bit of a slow start, losing to her opponent 0 - 6. Never to be discouraged, "Creynolds" outlasted the competition in the second set 6 - 4. Sophomore Maud McCole took control of her match at the outset and secured the point for the Zebras 6 - 0 in the first set. In the second, it was clear that her opponent had found her rhythm and simply could not be beat. Miranda Fiore '19 was ahead in the first set, but ultimately let it slip 4 - 6. She began the second set determined that the outcome would be different and secured the point that kept her team in the contest going into doubles. Madeline Graham '18 captured both singles points, playing a consistent game and keeping her opponent on the move.
A competitive and exciting match, the overall score was 5 - 7 at the close of singles, and the Zebras knew they would need to clinch all 3 of the doubles points to take home the W. Even though the Red Wings swept the doubles points, competitive sets were played by Reynolds and Lasry at #1, McCole and senior Laura Kaye (back from injury) at #2, and Averill Emery and Margaret Rand at #3.
The squad will put in one practice before playing a makeup Lawrence Academy match on Tuesday, quickly followed by Andover on Wednesday.
