The Middlesex boys' varsity crews faced Dexter School in their first contest of the spring racing season, although Dexter already had two races under their belts. Racing conditions were ideal, with flat water and no wind, albeit chilly.
In the first boat race, Middlesex held a slight lead over Dexter in the first 500 meters, but as they took the turn, Dexter pulled even and slowly extended their lead. Rowing a few beats higher, Dexter outpaced the Middlesex crew and finished 7.6 seconds ahead.
Dexter jumped just ahead at the start of the second boat race, but Middlesex maintained overlap through the halfway. Dexter eventually moved away, finishing 8.9 seconds ahead of MX.
The third boat race was the tightest of the day. Middlesex held a lead off the start, and they looked poised to walk away, but Dexter was persistent in their pursuit. Middlesex had to race hard from start to finish, finally crossing the line 4.5 seconds ahead.
In the fourth boat race, the Dexter crew rowed severely off course throughout the first half of the race. Middlesex took advantage, steering a straighter course and taking a lead. Once they got back on course, Dexter looked ready to make a move, but the Middlesex crew held them off and came across the line 16.1 seconds ahead of Dexter.
With the first race jitters behind them, Middlesex looks forward to gaining speed as the racing season continues. The crew faces perennial NEIRA powerhouse Belmont Hill on Wednesday.
