Girls' Varsity Tennis Defeats Concord Academy, 6-3

4/14/2017 12:53:00 PM

The Girls' Varsity Tennis team stepped out of the ISL again and won their match 6 - 3 Thursday against neighboring team Concord Academy. Sunny, windy, and cool, the courts had fortunately dried from the previous day's rain, and so the match could be played outside.
Senior Sophia Corning led the Middlesex singles lineup at #1, outlasting her opponent on aggressive baseline rallies 8 - 4. Helen Lasry '18 started off down but managed to hang on and eventually broke her opponent after 5 - 6, winning the next three games to take the set. Also off to a bit of a slow start, captain Caroline Reynolds '17 dug in after her third game and assertively took control of the set to decisively settle the contest 8 - 4. Pushing herself to dictate more of the points and take more risks, sophomore Miranda Fiore wore down her opponent to win her set 8 - 1.
With the overall match still in contention as the teams went into doubles, sophomore Margaret Rand and freshman Averill Emery proved to be the more consistent team at #3, winning a competitive set 9 - 7 and securing the overall match win for the Zebras. At #1 doubles, Lasry did not let anything slip by her with explosive returns and Reynolds dominated the opponents with powerful groundstrokes to the back corners of the court. This team won their set 8 - 4.
With a record of 2 - 1, the team has one practice before traveling to Nobles on Saturday for their next ISL match.
