Girls' Varsity Squash Tops St. George's, 5-2

2/21/2017 11:41:00 AM

Girls' Varsity Squash hosted St. George's on Saturday, February 18. The match was very even up and down the ladder, but MX prevailed 5-2. At #6, senior Lucy Reece went up 2-0 on her opponent, but then her opponent raised the level of her game, hitting some effective deep crosscourts, and prevailed in the next two; the momentum of the match seemed against her, but Lucy hit some clutch deep shots towards the end of the last game to prevail 11-9 in the fifth. At #2 sophomore Mira Handa got off to a fast start, shooting effectively from the T, and winning the first two games; her opponent won the T in the third to edge Mira 11-9, but Mira regained her earlier form to win 11-6 in the fourth. At #5 junior Nina Thomas got off to a fast start, hitting hard off both sides, but her opponent came back to take the second game 12-10 and the third 11-5 by winning the power-hitting battle. However, Nina began to hit better length and serve more effectively and came back to win the fourth game 11-8 and the fifth game 11-4.

MX thus had three victories, and needed one more. As it turned out, the Zebras earned two more victories: at #3, sophomore Syona Shah lost a very close fourth game in which she had a match ball, but she brushed off the miss and won a tight fifth game 11-8, using some fine deception on her crosses. At #1, senior Olivia Gish lost her first game, but, using better length and deception, came back to win the next two 11-3, 11-8. The fourth game was a marathon, but Olivia's opponent put excellent pressure on Olivia's left wall, to prevail 18-16. However, Olivia came out determined in the fifth, hitting terrific length and playing the right wall effectively; she closed out the match 11-5 by hitting some surprise shots to her opponent's forehand.

The Zebras were pleased to win the match 5-2; they showed a lot of grit and determination in winning 4 five-game matches. Their last home match is Wednesday, Feb. 22, against Concord Academy.
