MX hosted a strong and deep St. Paul's team on Wednesday, February 8. The power and experience of the visitors proved too much for Middlesex at the bottom of the ladder and though a number of the games were close, the Zebras could not break through to win one, despite moving and hitting well. At the top of the ladder, the match was closer. After falling just short at the end of the first game, #3 sophomore Syona Shah used deep hitting followed by low hard shots to take the second game 11-8; her opponent, however, began to cover the court exceptionally well and to cut down on errors, and though Syona moved her opponent around the court beautifully, she could not quite find the combination to end points and lost in 4 games. At #2, sophomore Mira Handa struggled in the first game, but came back to win the second 15-13, using a nice variety of shots. She continued to pressure her opponent with lob serves and deep crosscourts to take the third game 11-8. After hitting too much in the center and losing the fourth 11-3, Mira recovered her form to win her match 11-3 in the fifth. Last on the court was #1 senior Olivia Gish who started brilliantly with clean, hard hitting to take the first game 11-4. However, her opponent recovered to win the second with some good length and deception. The third game was a battle, the key to the match; Olivia's opponent played a couple of strong points just at the end of the third game to turn the tide of the match in her favor. Lots of good squash up and down the ladder by both teams today!
