Quirk and Charles lead Middlesex to Victory at Roxbury Latin, 3-2

11/3/2017 6:16:00 PM

Roxbury Latin and Middlesex squared off in a classic fall ISL battle that ended in a 3-2 victory for Middlesex.  Middlesex got on the board in the 6th minute, when Haydn Herrema played a penetrating pass between two defenders for Josh Quirk to run on to and tuck past the onrushing RL keeper.  In the 22nd minute, Ben Bryant took advantage of a loose touch by a Middlesex defender to wiggle free for space and tuck a low ball with his left to knot the score at 1-1.  The game evened out in terms of chances for both sides for about 20 minutes until Jacob Charles found a streaking run from Josh Quirk, who took a touch to set up a shot across his body that nestled into the side net for a 2-1 halftime advantage to the visitors.  In the second half, Matt Uek established himself as the dominant player for Roxbury Latin, and his size and skill posed a constant threat, as keeper Harry Weitzel and the RL backs played a flurry of long balls up to him.  His hard work was rewarded in the 64th minute, as he wound up with a loose clearance at his feet at the top of the box for a finish on the ground, and a 2-2 score line with 25 minutes left to play.   Much of the next ten minutes looked like a draw was the likely result, but Jacob Charles stepped up after a few close calls and settled a ball that was won by pressure from Herrema to take a set up touch and rifle the ball just inside the far post for the match winner.  Roxbury Latin continued to launch aerial attacks down the field, and won numerous corner kicks down the stretch.  Middlesex held on for the win, and RL deserves great praise for their grit and competitiveness.  The goals allowed by Middlesex were the first after a incredible scoreless streak of 890 minutes, spanning 11 matches and almost 15 hours of competitive play.
