The Middlesex Girls' Soccer team traveled to Groton to take on the Spartans of Lawrence Academy on yet another gorgeous New England fall afternoon. The Zebras challenged themselves to set a good early tone, in hopes of erasing their struggles on the road.
Â
The action came on early, as Lawrence sliced a ball through our back line and converted to take a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. However, Middlesex took the resulting kick-off, moved the ball nicely downfield, and Ellery Winkler '19 played a ball through the Lawrence D, which Carly Tilson '20 collected and deposited in the LA net to even the score. The play then settled into a contrast of styles. Middlesex notched the next goal in the 23rd minute, a result of great ball movement from several players which culminated in Tilson playing into Basha Waxman '21, who then fed Winkler for the goal. The score stood 2-1 at the halftime whistle.
Â
Lawrence came out with focused determination, and created the first few opportunities of the half. Daisy Boynton '20 was up to the task in net, calming defusing situations inside the penalty box. The game swung back and forth throughout most of the second half, until Middlesex put the game on ice with Winkler's second goal of the game at 76th minute.
