The Middlesex Girls' Soccer team closed a fine week of practice and play with a visit from league opponent Milton Academy, on a beautiful early fall New England afternoon.
Â
After a back and forth opening 20 minutes, Milton seemed to find the edge in possession and territory, but goalkeeper Daisy Boynton '20 was able to thwart Milton's early attempts. Middlesex also created some nice opportunities in front, but were unable to cash in. Late in half, Milton pounced on some unsettled play in the Middlesex backfield and put the ball in the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Â
Determined to correct the errors of the earlier play, the Middlesex girls came out for the second half looking to push the pace and the urgency of play. Unfortunately, it was Milton who tallied the next goal, pushing their lead to 2-0. Facing a critical point in the early part of their season, the girls came together and vowed to fight on. Middlesex immediately responded in the 50th minute by putting one in the net, a great finish from Ellery Winkler '19 that was created on a nifty through-ball by Carly Tilson '20. Middlesex continued to play a high-pressure game, creating another scoring opportunity that Maddie MacMaster '18 smoothly finished off a feed from Winkler in the 59th. The final 20 minutes saw both teams create scoring chances, until a counter-attack by Middlesex resulted in a penalty inside the box in the final minute of play. Winkler calming deposited the PK in the net, earning the Zebras a critical 3 points at home.
Â
The Zebras hope to carry the momentum from the week, as they travel to Lawrence Academy on Wednesday.
