Girls' Cross Country Defeats Rivers and Tabor

10/23/2017 8:01:00 AM

On an exquisite fall afternoon, Middlesex traveled to the lovely home course of Tabor Academy at Washburn Park for a quad meet. Against the backdrop of dazzling autumn leaves and glowing pastoral scenery, the Zebras ran to solid wins against Rivers and Tabor but fell short to BB&N in the team scoring, while the JV dominated throughout the combined race.

Sophomore Gabby Walsh came in first for the team, working well with juniors Maud McCole and Charlotte O'Toole throughout the race to fast and determined finishes, as they took 3rd-5th places overall after the BB&N frontrunners. Junior Katie Fujimori and senior captain Emily Li ran tough, tactical races to round out the team scoring, with sophomore Maya Sidhu following a few seconds behind, ahead of the third runner from Tabor and the fourth runner from Rivers. Junior Wani Pandey ran a steady race to finish for varsity, finishing ahead of the 7th BB&N runner despite a late charge from the Knight.

In the JV race-within-a-race, the depth and talent of this year's Middlesex team was again on display. Freshman Jillian Robertson worked with teammates and displayed composed running to earn her 4th (!) JV win this season. Freshman Meena Menon, sophomore Alene Fernandes, senior captain Alice Crow, and junior Soleil Kerfoot all finished within 20 seconds of her to complete the JV scoring, with only one BB&N runner breaking up the pack in the middle. Junior Tess Kelley and senior Katie Powers had steady races to end up ahead of the first JV runners from Rivers and Tabor, thus securing the perfect scores against the two aforementioned schools. Sophomores Nina Douge and Hayden Monahan as well as junior Emily Penaloza deserve mention for their significant PRs this race.
