After morning SATs and patiently watching the two other teams wrestle each other, Middlesex wrestlers finally got to the mats to face Lexington Christian Academy and Portsmouth Abbey. The match began with a forfeit for senior captain Naomi Hunt. Her leadership and talent has given this young team a good beacon to follow.
Pins by sophomores Peter Daichman, Dante Gutbrod, and a tech fall by Marcus Coward put the team ahead for good. In the second half of matches, Ted Pyne competed against a top six New England placer last year, winning by pin and setting up one of the highlight matches of the day. Freshman Cal Fries wrestled his best match of the year so far, securing the pin in the third period and earning this week's Middlesex wrestler of the week honors.
In a follow up match with Portsmouth Abbey, Middlesex gave up five forfeits, which ended up being the difference as the Zebras fell 45-34. Making up the thirty points by forfeits was a daunting task but pins by Peter Daichman, Dante Gutbrod, a fantastic pin by Diego Flores, a major decision by Marcus Coward, and a second period pin by Ted Pyne helped the Zebras close the gap. Senior captain Naomi Hunt posted her second win the of day with a second period pin, which brought the score to a one-match difference, leaving the young team eager and ready to get back to practice after the semester break.
