Girls' Varsity Squash had a busy end to the week, earning a surprise victory on Saturday against a strong Dana Hall team after playing well to defeat BB&N the day before. On Friday at home against BB&N, the team played solidly up and down the ladder, with sophomore Mira Handa at #2, senior Pennie Gould at #4, junior Nina Thomas at #5, senior Grace Crozier at #6, and senior Lucy Reece at #7 all winning in three games; sophomore Syona Shah at #3 ended her match with strong shot placement, to win 3 games to 1.
On Saturday, playing at home once again, the Zebras knew they were up against a Dana Hall team with a superior record in most positions. MX played with determination, poise, and resourcefulness, however, to earn an unexpected victory. Sophomore Mira Handa began the match with her most complete performance to date, taking control of the T and moving her opponent from side to side and thus counteracting her opponent's power and securing a 3-1 victory. Meanwhile, at #6, Grace Crozier recovered from losing her first game by serving more accurately and hitting her deep shots more cleanly; thus, Grace won the next three games and her match. At #7, senior Lucy Reese played clever squash to win in three close games. At #5, junior Nina Thomas had trouble at first adjusting to the power of her opponent, but Nina improved her serve returns and her length and closed out the match 3-1, 11-8 in the fourth game. Last on court were #1 senior Olivia Gish and her Dana Hall opponent. The two treated the crowd to some spectacular points, and their match went back and forth: Dana Hall won game 3 11-9, but Olivia won the fourth game by the same score, to win her match. In the end, Middlesex won the team match 5-2. Though they did not prevail in their matches, Sophomore Syona Shah at #3 and senior Pennie Gould at #4 played their best squash of the year, fighting cleverly and determinedly against strong opponents.
