Girls' Varsity Squash traveled to St. Mark's Wednesday and emerged with a 4-3 victory after a very tight match. The two teams were about as evenly matched as they could be. Senior and captain Olivia Gish won at #1 in three very close games, as did junior Nina Thomas at #5. At #4 senior and captain Pennie Gould was down two games to none, though she lost the second game 11-13. Sensing that her deep shots were creating an opening for her, Pennie consistently moved her opponent to the back on both sides and won the last three games 13-11, 11-7, 11-9 and thus her match; the rallies were long and hardfought up to the last point. At #6 senior Grace Crozier was also down two games to none, having lost the first game 13-11; she fought back to tie the match at two games apiece, but fell just short at the end, losing 10-12 in the fifth game. At #7 senior Lucy Reece got off to a strong start, hitting the ball to the back corners; Lucy went up two games to none; however, her opponent began to dig the ball out of the back much more successfully and then to take control of the T; Lucy began to lose control of the match and her opponent won the next two games 11-9 and 11-7. Lucy was behind in the fifth game and her opponent was controlling the T; the match seemed to be slipping away from Middlesex; however, by dint of great effort, Lucy hung on through many deuces and many match balls against her, and won the last game 16-14! She thus secured the victory for Middlesex. The Zebras have had many close matches over the years, but this one was the closest I can remember.
