Girls' Soccer Ties Southfield, 1-1

9/28/2016 9:33:00 AM

After a strong team win on Friday, Middlesex traveled to Brookline, Mass. to take on first time opponent Southfield School. The Zebras took some time to orient to the turf field and to work the fatigue out of their legs. As a result Southfield took an early lead with a well-played shot under the cross bar beyond the Zebra keeper. Middlesex then took over the momentum peppering the Southfield goalie with many close opportunities including a corner nearly over the goal-line, a missed penalty kick and other close shots inside the box. Southfield's athletic keeper thwarted the attack coming up with outstanding saves until finally Isabelle Fuchs '17 found Kiara Wahnschafft '17 on the back post on an outstanding direct kick. Middlesex hunkered down for the second half and moved the ball well and dynamically and continued its offensive attack. However, once again, the Zebras could not get the ball into the net with near misses on well played crosses into the box and two goals called back for offsides. Southfield proved to be a formidable opponent and the Zebras came away with a well-earned tie. Daisy Boynton '20 stepped up admirably in goal after an injury to the starting goalie and kept Middlesex secure in the backfield. The Zebras will enjoy a much needed rest this weekend and then put together two strong practices before heading to Concord, N.H. to take on another tough opponent at St. Paul's School on Wednesday at 3:15PM.
