Boys' Soccer Battles to 1-1 Stalemate

9/17/2016 6:32:00 PM

Pomfret traveled to Middlesex on a stunningly beautiful fall Saturday and left with a share of the points after a 1-1 draw.  Pomfret has been a traditional New England Class B power in recent years, and their older squad battled hard for the point that they earned. In the first half, Middlesex controlled the general tempo of play, with Pomfret finding their chances created through long throw-ins and ensuing corner kicks.  They jumped out to an early first half lead from a corner kick, as Middlesex keeper Kenyon Pelletier was obstructed in his six yard box which led to a simple headed finish for Chase Zimmerman on the bouncing ball.

Middlesex showed great character after going a goal down, and continued to create the scoring chances through their midfield passing and strong utilization of the width.  Sophomore Josh Quirk led the Middlesex attack today, and after sending a first shot past the keeper but inches wide of the far post he opened his Middlesex scoring account with a clinical finish to knot the score at 1-1 in the latter phase of the first half.  Quirk had a third clear cut chance to score later in the half, but his open look sailed just above the crossbar.

Senior Liam Sloan was exceptional in dictating the speed of play and switching the point of attack often for Middlesex.  Gavin Garrity-Rokous and Justin Krayer had standout performances along the back line as well.  James Sanderson and Cole Whisnand had several near misses, and Jacob Charles put in a solid second half defensively and headed a great chance just wide on a corner kick.  The chances were abundant, but the final ball and finish are still to be found on the training ground.  There is no doubt that the Middlesex boys have already shown significant improvement in just a week, and after training on Monday the boys will travel across town to take on Concord Academy at 4:15pm on Tuesday.
