Girls' Varsity Tennis Extends Win Streak

5/18/2016 9:50:00 PM

The Middlesex Girls' Varsity tennis team continued its winning streak against Brooks 12 - 3 on Wednesday afternoon. It was a beautiful day for tennis on our home courts with temperatures in the mid-60s and sunny skies.
Led by Sophia Corning at #1, the Zebras captured 10 out of 12 of the available singles points and secured the overall victory before moving into doubles. Match sets were swept by Leyla Hotamisligil '18, captain Abby Meyers '16, Helen Lasry '18, Caroline Reynolds '17, and Laura Kaye '17. Don't be fooled by the final score; most sets were hard-fought with many competitive points played and games going into deuce. Indeed, the Zebras' felt the results of their training and hard work this season, and they won each point by out-hustling the competition.
At #1 doubles, Sophia and Leyla were down 2 - 5 at one point. Determined to pull themselves out of the hole, they returned to play with more spunk and won the next four games to take the lead. However, they struggled to keep their rhythm, and unfortunately their opponents came back to take the set. Caroline and Laura also started off with a competitive doubles match, fighting to maintain their lead. Finally, they broke away from their opponents (5 - 3) and continued to play an aggressive, focused match to take the set 8 - 4. Senior - freshman duo Emma Pratt '16 and Maud McCole '19 showed off the depth of the Middlesex ladder as well as their great doubles chemistry, particularly in setting up the net player to construct and close points. They won their match decisively 8 - 2.
The team's overall record is 4 - 8, and we hope to keep the positive momentum against Tabor on Saturday.
