The wrestlers challenged the traditional order of the ISL wrestling rankings and completed the most successful year in program history, finishing with 14 wins and 1 loss. The outstanding effort was due to the work ethic and dedication of the entire team. From the first-year wrestlers to the captains and seniors, the team gave everything they had to finish strong and compile the best record in program history.
After a tough loss to the all boys' school, Belmont Hill last week, the coaches were looking for the team's response to adversity, especially the response in the last dual matches of the year against St. Paul's and St. Marks. Traveling up north to St. Paul's, the last match would take place in hostile territory. A few last minute health issues kept a few wrestlers from competing in line-up, which became another obstacle for the team to overcome.
The team, now becoming a group akin to family, was able to lean on each other to overcome the tests that they were challenged with and still come out on top. Against St. Paul's, Naomi Hunt, Dante Gutbrod, Justin D'Alessandro in the light weights, Ted Pyne, Gavin Fujimori, Jivan Purutyan, Gordon Hargraves in the middle-weights, and Andrew Zhang and Alex Wagner in the heavy weights all contributed points to bring the final score to Middlesex 48, St. Paul's 36. The victory was great for the program, which had so many close calls in recent years against St. Paul's.
The team finished the year in style with a victory over St. Marks School. An outstanding match from Naomi Hunt resulted in a pin over a worthy athletic opponent. Victories by Peter Daichman, Dante Gutbrod, Emily Yu and Justin D'Alessandro, dominated the lightweight match-ups.
Ted Pyne was solid at 138lbs winning by pin. Gavin Fujimori dissected his opponent over two periods, mounting a nine-point advantage before finishing with a pin. Jivan Purutyan seemingly had the match won, but was forced into sudden takedown overtime and had only his second loss all season. Gordon Hargraves got back on the winning track with a very strong performance, winning by pin in the first period. Andrew Zhang won an exhibition match over a very good opponent and Alex Wagner grabbed the forfeit to conclude the scoring and finish the dual part of the 2015-2016 wrestling season.
The team finished with an outstanding 14 wins and 1 loss on the year and now looks ahead to the Graves Kelsey on February 13.
