A gloomy October sky, racked with grey clouds and spitting wind and rain, offered a raw and unsettling backdrop to the final home race of the season for the Middlesex harriers. A years-long home winning streak, handed down by the New England and ISL championship teams of the last half decade, was on the line against a strong BB&N squad. In the tradition of their predecessors, the Zebras met the challenge head on, earning a decisive 25-30 victory with a true team effort.
Senior co-captain Ryan Ewing, competing for the final time on the home course, won the race in 17:55 by outlasting a strong challenge from the BB&N frontrunner. Heroic performances by sophomore Connor Page (18:14) and junior Luke Collins (18:27) earned third and fourth place for Middlesex and staked a lead that the Zebras would not relinquish. Sophomore Jack Audett, freshman Colin Craig and junior Ted Pyne also beat their opposite numbers from BB&N, and senior co-captain Jack Pelletier set a home-course personal record in 19:13.
Senior Chad Arle won the junior varsity contest in 20:12, with junior Kiran Tremblay close behind in 20:29. Sophomore Andrew Danoff, junior Zeke Golnik and senior Dan Kramer accounted for the rest of the scoring as the Zebras fell to the Knights by a 25-32 scoreline.
The regular season concludes for the boys from Middlesex with a trip to North Andover to face Brooks, Thayer and Roxbury Latin.
