Boys' Varsity Soccer Falls Just Short in ISL Battle with Belmont Hill

10/25/2016 8:55:00 PM

A heartbreaking result ended a fantastic match up of two of the top teams in the ISL on Wednesday, as Belmont Hill snagged all of the points with a game winner in the last five minutes.  Belmont Hill took the initiative in the first 15 minutes, as Middlesex adjusted tactically to their system.  The adjustment came just before Belmont Hill scored an unorthodox goal on an indirect free kick inside of the penalty area for a back pass called on a Middlesex defender. The score was tied at 1-1 before long as sophomore Josh Quirk took a touch to beat his defender to the inside then unleashed a screamer into the top right corner of the net.

With the second half opening at 1-1, Middlesex had taken control of the midfield and was finding space in the width through the solid play of Liam Sloan and the hustle of Cole Whisnand.  The momentum turned when Belmont Hill's Cam Gordon snuck towards the back post unmarked after the clearance of a set piece and was first to a ball in the air to poke it past Kenyon Pelletier for a 2-1 lead.  That lead lasted less than ten minutes, as James Sanderson played a ball forward that took a deflection towards the keeper for Cole Whisnand to run on to and slot home to make it 2-2.  As the game wound down, Middlesex built attacks through the midfield to the width with their passing as Belmont Hill launched long balls to their two talented strikers to run on to.  The winner came in the 86th minutes as Matthew Goncalves beat the Middlesex defense to a long ball, rounded the onrushing keeper and had the composure to bury the ball just inches ahead of a retreating defender.  It was an excellent effort from both sides, and it was cruel for Middlesex to walk away with nothing to show for controlling the play for long stretches.
