It was a fierce battle between the Zebras on Friday afternoon as Middlesex and Groton faced off in Groton, Massachusetts. The Middlesex Zebras got off to a strong start with strong passing and ball movement and they carried most of the play for the first half. Middlesex got onto the scoreboard first with a strong shot by Jacqueline White '17 with an assist by Ellery Winkler '19.  Middlesex continued its siege and netted a second goal by Lucy Reece '17 who followed in a rebound to put Middlesex back on the scoreboard. Middlesex went into the half up by a dangerous 2-0 lead. Groton took the field in the second half with determination and intensity and countered with two very quick goals in the first eight minutes of play to put the Middlesex Zebras on their heels and to even the score 2-2. Middlesex then regrouped and settled into a calm, composed and focused style of soccer. They settled back into their patient possession game and created numerous offensive opportunities before Kiara Wahnschafft '17 scored the game winning goal into the upper left hand corner of the net behind the reach of the strong Groton keeper. From there it was a defensive battle by Middlesex and strong offensive performance from Groton, but eventually with smart play by Ellery Winkler '19, Maddie MacMaster '18, and Isabelle Fuchs '17 up top to wear down the clock, Middlesex came up victorious in another epic battle with Groton. Middlesex will use the long weekend for much needed rest and then get back to work next week to prepare for an away match against Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass. at 3:15PM.
