Girls' Soccer Nets Four in ISL Win Over Governor's

10/12/2016 9:26:00 PM

Governor's came out fast and furious and put the Zebras on their heels for the initial first quarter of the game. They generated some dangerous offensive opportunities, once again, thwarted by outstanding play by Ali Joseph '20 in net and a tough defensive line of Caroline Reynolds '17, Emma Murphy '19, Corina Kotidis '18, Caroline Hughes '18 and Shannon Wing '17. Needless to say, the Zebras got to work to regain momentum and control and were able to get onto the scoreboard first with Kiara Wahnschafft '17 putting in a rebound off a cross from Maddie MacMaster '18 beyond the Governor's keeper. Middlesex continued to maintain momentum with strong defensive running by Isabelle Fuchs '17 and Lucie Gildehaus '18. The Zebras netted their second goal off a remarkable shot by Maddie MacMaster '18 from outside the 18 after an excellent through ball by Carly Tilson '20. Middlesex went into halftime up by two. Governor's came out with intensity and determination, but the Zebras fought back with a well-executed team possession game. Ellery Winkler '19 was next on the scoreboard with a great shot from a strong assist by Jac White '17. But Governor's quickly counted with their own goal off of a defensive breakdown just outside the 18. Shortly thereafter, Winkler put in a penalty kick to put Middlesex up by 3. From there it was a team effort to maintain the lead and secure the win, but the Governors proved relentless and finally notched their second goal off of a failed clear to put the ball beyond the Zebra keeper to close the gap. Middlesex hunkered down and secured the win with strong team defense. The Zebras look forward to another I.S.L rivalry against the Groton Zebras on Friday October 14th at 2:00PM in Groton, Mass.
