Girls' Varsity Soccer Tops Andover, 2-1

9/24/2015 12:34:00 PM

It was a beautiful, cool fall day in Concord when Middlesex hosted the Big Blue from Andover. Middlesex executed an excellent team performance right from the start. Middlesex looked to possess with patience and composure for the eighty minutes of play. Andover was a tough opponent utilizing their speed up front and strong defense in back well to thwart any offensive opportunity for the Zebras in the first half. Middlesex nearly got onto the scoreboard when Kiara Wahnschafft '17 hit the post on a redirection from a cross and Jacqueline White '17 rebounded with a ball just over the crossbar. As both teams battled for possession, Andover scored first on an excellent back post shot. The Zebras went into halftime down by a goal.

The second half was a stellar team performance. Middlesex had regrouped and fought tenaciously to take back control of the game. Finally about fifteen minutes into the second half Isabelle Fuchs '17 played an exceptional through ball to Ellery Winkler '19 which she put past the Andover keeper to even the score. From there both teams dug in to achieve the go ahead goal. Middlesex utilized their shape well and moved the ball quickly, but patiently with excellent play by Caroline Reynolds '17 in the backfield, strong running by Maddie MacMaster '18 in the midfield, and well executed balls by Caroline Hughes '18, Eliza Jevon '17, and Kiara Wahnschafft '17. With four minutes left in the game, Isabelle Fuchs '17 found Ellery Winkler '19 again up top who again deftly chipped the ball over the keeper to put Middlesex on top 2 to 1.

Pauline Santry '17 was outstanding in goal taking charge of the box and keeping Andover off the scoreboard. The clock wound down and Middlesex secured the win on a fantastic team effort. Middlesex will now focus on their first I.S.L opponent this Saturday, September 26th in Southborough against a tough St. Mark's team.
