The Zebras travelled down to Pomfret, Conn. to take on the mighty Griffins. It was a beautiful afternoon and both teams engaged in a back and forth battle in what has become a perennial rivalry. Despite being down in numbers due to injuries and illness, Middlesex took the field with confidence and quickly grabbed hold of possession, winning key 50/50 battles in the midfield by Isabelle Fuchs '17 and strong defense in the backfield by Caroline Reynolds '17, Lucy Reece '17, Caroline Hughes '18 and Eliza Jevon '17. Pauline Santry '17 was stellar in net making key saves and coming off her line to thwart any Griffin offense. With 25 minutes into the first half, the Zebras scored their only goal off of a corner when Kylie Quinlan '19 collected the ball out of the air and swiftly played in to the far post past the Pomfret keeper. The Zebras went into halftime up by one goal.
Pomfret came out with a vengeance at the start of the second half and moved the ball well putting the Zebras on their toes. As Middlesex pressed offensively, the Griffins quickly counter-attacked to play a nice through ball past our defense and into the net. The game was tied 1-1 and again the play went back and forth with both teams working to gain control. Finally, Pomfret scored their second goal from a long shot outside the 18 to hit the inside of the crossbar and just over the line to go up by one. Middlesex rallied and in the final 20 minutes dominated and attacked the Griffins final 3rd with excellent passing and composure. Despite this valiant effort late into the second half, the clock wound down and the Zebras found themselves one goal short. Nonetheless, Middlesex learned some valuable lessons and they will get back on the field on Monday to prepare for the Big Blue at home on Tuesday at 3:00PM.
