The Middlesex Zebras traveled across town on May 2nd for a matchup with the Groton Zebras. Forecasted to be a close game, both teams battled until the final minutes keeping the fans on the edge of their seats. Groton struck first, but Middlesex answered with several key defensive plays and three unanswered goals- a function of pure teamwork and athleticism. In the final ten minutes of the half, the play was back and forth but Groton capitalized on a few scoring opportunities resulting in an 8-7 Groton edge at the half. In the second half, Groton took an 11-10 lead with 20:53, that would end their scoring opportunities for over 18 minutes as the Middlesex Zebras dug their heels in defensively. The defensive unit stiffened and stymied the Groton attackers. Rallying from the defensive shutdowns, the attacking unit scored four unanswered goals to take a 13-11 lead with just 6:30 remaining in the game. New players Kat French and Ellie Herring scored the last two goals to give Middlesex the edge. The Zebras managed to stall out for four minutes, but Groton caught a break with 2:49 remaining and brought the score to 12-11 in Middlesex's favor. Senior Natalie Zaffiro won a huge draw control and Middlesex maintained possession. In the final minutes, Shannon "Shwing" Wing held the ball with the help of freshman goalie Caroline Fischer to seal the win.
Seven different players added goals in the win, demonstrating the depth of the attacking unit led by CMills and including Shwing, Edna, Saghir, Fehnel, Herring, and French. Fehnel, Demoulas, Saghir, and newcomer Sage Nye were relentless on the ground and on the draw.
