The Middlesex Girls' Varsity Tennis team lost to Groton Saturday 3 -12. The match was played on the Middlesex courts with mild temperatures and sunny skies.
With 3 out of 4 of our top players out of commission due to injury or sickness, the team stepped up and played some of their best this season. Unlike some of their previous matches, Middlesex girls started off strong. Most singles players were in the lead in their first set. As the sets wore on, however, Groton dug in and came back to take most of the first round of points.
Playing #1 singles, sophomore Caroline Reynolds fought a hard singles match. Though her opponent was not a big hitter, Groton's #1 was a savvy player, who kept Caroline moving around the court. Caroline responded with a cautious, consistent game, as she worked to attack her opponents weaknesses. Ultimately, she split sets, winning the first 7 - 5 and losing the second in a tie breaker 5 - 7.
Senior Electra Washburn also played a fierce match against her opponent at #4. She handily took the first set 6 - 2, pushing her opponent back and working her way toward net. In the second set, however, she struggled to keep the momentum going especially on high-pressure points, and her opponent won 2 - 6.
Electra continued to fight for each point in doubles with her partner, junior Emma Pratt at #3. The girls won a hard-earned set 8 - 6 and continue to boast a winning record at the position.
The team will put in two practices working to refine their fundamentals and prepare mentally before facing Pomfret on Wednesday.
